About

Who we are

Mazingira Pamoja Initiative is a dynamic youth-led organization established in 2021 by visionary Founders where our roots stem from a shared passion for environmental stewardship. Our aim is to work with the community as to make a significant difference in protecting and restoring our environment, while also uplifting local communities and empowering the women and girls in the community. Witnessing the neglect of marine ecosystems and the intensive plastic pollution in our community, we embarked on a mission to drive change proudly collaborating with a community of 72 determined women on Funzi Island as we embarked on a transformative journey to restore and revive our precious mangrove ecosystems and to keep our marine ecosystems clean from marine pollution.

Driven by a passion for transformation, we observed a lack of environmental awareness in schools, we began with climate change training in schools, igniting awareness and positive transformation among students. We discovered a pressing need during these sessions – girls lacking menstrual kits and missing school as a result. This realization birthed our impactful #KeepGirlsInSchool campaign, dedicated to empowering girls in menstrual hygiene practices , to provide access to sanitary towels and breaking barriers that hinder girls' education.

What we've done

About 1

Climate Education

Through our work with schools and educational institutions, we help children understand the importance of environmental conservation and the role that they can play.

This was evidently seen when we went for class sessions in schools and students barely knew anything about climate change and that's when we began school training on climate change and we have seen progress. Introduced educating them through art in a way they can understand the impacts of climate change. We later introduced tree planting In schools or rather greening schools in our community and this has contributed to us planting over 10,000 indigenous trees with students. This has also led to revival of environmental clubs in schools and formulation of new environmental clubs to raise more environmental champions.

Tree planting and Mangrove

Recognizing the vital role of mangroves in ecosystem health, we actively engage in mangrove planting projects.

These efforts not only enhance biodiversity but also serves as a practical demonstration of the organization's commitment to tangible environmental conservation. We work alongside 72 women in Funzi, who are contributing a lot in restoration of mangrove forests. Our goal is to empower women who are at the forefront of fighting climate but yet face adverse effects of climate change. We have so far planted with them 6000 mangroves and this has led to them receiving benefits that has helped them meet their livelihoods.

Pads project

We also recognize the importance of educating girls about menstrual hygiene practices.

Through various programs we work to empower girls to take control of their bodies, health, and hygiene, while also breaking down cultural stigmas surrounding menstruation. This was as a result of visiting a school and girls followed us to ask if we could bring them sanitary towels because they didn't have any and many of them had missed classes due to lack of access of the sanitary towels. They also mentioned of the increase in infections and this made us launch the #KeepGirlsInSchool campaign which has now supported 1000 girls and our goal is to reach 5000 girls every year.
